Homework with an Au Pair Help.

“Is asking an Au Pair to help with homework a reasonable request?”, ask many host parents.

Yes, one of Au Pair Responsibilities is to provide the host kids with homework help and tutoring. An Au Pair can help children complete their school assignments before the host parents arrive home from work each weeknight.  In addition, she can definitely help host kids learn the second language if it’s her native language or she knows that particular one.

Many Au Pairs are professional teachers, and University graduates, who have years of tutoring and teaching experience.  They can  provide dependable supervision and tutoring.

Some Au Pairs don’t have a teaching background,  they are not tutors and they need host parents help in developing  the consistent homework routine with their kids.

To develop good study habits host parents can make a Homework Contract that stays out what is expected of the student and caregiver.

Developing a homework schedule is vital to homework success. It is important to select a place and time homework will be done each day. Parents may need to help their Au Pair set up a system for keeping track of their children’s assignments, due dates, and tests.

I agree that an au pair is much more than a baby sitter or nanny because the au pair is part of the family and helps with childcare related duties. Hosting an au pair can help the family on many levels. Family member, friend, caregiver, academic tutor, household helper are all ways to describe an au pair. In these tough economic times, hosting an au pair can be a cost saving solution compared to other childcare options as well.

We have been a host family to eight au pairs from around the world. We started the program in 1999. The program has been very successful for us and we plan to continue in that success. Our current au pair is in her second year with us and we adore her. We live in Long Island in a modest home with four bedrooms and two bathrooms. Both my husband and I work in New York City. We have a very busy lifestyle in the office and at home. Our children, aged 16, 13 and 7, have many friends in the neighbourhood. Our eldest doesn’t really need supervision. We also have three dogs. Love the program!
