Why is it easier for a young child to learn a new language than an adult?

Language learning is a natural process when kids are young. Recent studies show that the best time for a child to learn another language is in the first years of life.

According to Harry Chugani, a Detroitpediatric neurologist, foreign language teaching should begin when children are in preschool—when teachers can maximize a child’s willingness and ability to learn. By the time a student reaches high school, the optimum learning period is lost.Juliana and kid1

Childen who exposed to two languages learn the second language naturally, applying the same skills they use to acquire their native language. Older children and adults have to learn the language consciously by studying it. However, when people immerse themselves in a language like children, through play and exploration, they can learn a language quickly and easily. Also, young children don’t fear of making mistakes or mispronouncing words like adults do.

Most children in the world speak more than one language because kids often have a natural exposure to a few languages in daily life. In the United States, not many children have this opportunity, unless they may have an Au Pair and a chance to exposure to a second language.

Au Pairs help children learn a second language through study and play naturally which leaves parents not having to pay for the expensive lessons.
