Halloween in the US. Cultural differences.

Hey guys, It is Mariia, Ukrainian au pair again. It is my second Au Pair year in Bucks County, PA with my awesome host family I want to share with you today about my Au Pair experience and cultural differences.

Happy Autumn and enjoy the magic of this beautiful season! Fall in the US has two my favorite holidays – the first one is Halloween and the second one is Thanksgivings.  Thanksgiving dinner get together is very important for everyone here.Au Pair from Ukraine Maria 1

So let’s start from Halloween. For me as a person who came from Europe (Ukraine)  Halloween is supposed to be the scariest day of the year. So you have to look as scary as possible. Your costume, your make up  and even a hair style should be very scary. So my expectation about Halloween was really wrong.

For American Halloween is a big exciting day.   Here, in the US,  you  don’t need to be scary and you don’t really need a special make up. It is just a day for dressed up. More like a carnival.

Kids in costumes go from house-to-house asking for treats with the phrase “Trick or treat” and American are happily waiting for kids to give them the sweets.  There are many people outside dressed up. Almost every single house decorate nicely and it’s just cool to watch while you drive at night.  It makes me feel really special and I like it!  Kids are getting as much candies as possible and enjoying  their”treat or tricks” adventure.

Happy Halloween  “Щасливого Хелоуіну”,  Trick-or-Treat “Пригощай або пошкодуєш” 🙂  and you are ready to celebrate Halloween in Ukraine!
