Au Pair Diary
Right From the Beginning.
Here I am sitting in a room in my host family house in Philadelphia with a lot of emotions and feelings running through my heart and my head. Who could have thought that I would be an Au Pair in America in the same year that I finished with school in South-Africa…..
My name is La-Roche Potgieter and I am 18 years old and this is my story…
About seven months ago I was sitting in one of my classes in school listening to Universities, Tecnicons, Colleges and Gap year organizers. All of them tried to sell themselves to us and explained why we should join them, but the one that had my full attention was a gap year program called Au Pair Travel. It really sounded amazing and just then and there I decided that this is what I wanted to do! I couldn’t make up my mind of what I wanted to study and I would not sit at home doing nothing for a whole year.
My mother and I went to Au Pair Travel and spoke to Sharon that works with goAUPAIR agency, she gave us all the information that we needed and we got all the forms that should be done before you can go. I filled the forms in as quickly as I could. That took me about two and a half weeks to do, but I did it so I can match with a family as soon as possible.
The matching takes quite a while because all my forms have to be sent to goAUPAIR agency in America and then to the host families who are interested in hosting me. It starts with an email from the host family with an explanation of where this family is from, how many children does this family have, etc.
At times it can feel like you are never going to get the right family but you just have to keep faith. Three months went by and then I got the host family that I was looking for. My host family is the family that I dreamed about since I got this whole idea in my head of being an Au Pair………..
You will hear from me soon and I promise to keep all of you updated. Photos are coming !
