Buddy Appreciation Month

Girls, it’s time to pull out the BUDDY in each and everyone of us. Alright, alright, Christmas is over but Buddy from Elf is still awesome. Buddy’s excitement and plans are basically self explanatory. This is how we should act when we sign up to be another au pairs buddy, since we’re taking responsibility to be that new au pairs ‘best friend’.

If you still aren’t sure what is means to be a buddy, check out Polina’s article: Au Pairs Buddy or Lilla’s post: Are you a good buddy?

(Also, welcome to the blog Lilla, can’t wait to read more of your articles!)

Okay, so the Au Pair Buddy program started in March 2014 thanks to one of the coolest people I know Cosima Kunz – the Au Pair from Germany, not only is she amazing because she always allows me to have shotgun in her car and makes the funniest faces, but she is a true friend with a heart of gold.

I asked Cosima why she wanted to be a buddy again to two new Australian au pairs (Kiah and Amber) and here’s her answer: “Because I know that it’s important to have a helping hand in the beginning. Everything is new to you and you feel kind of lost at some point. And then it’s great to have a person who’s there for you. I’m happy to be that person! And on top it’s an awesome way to gain new friends!”

Thank you Cosima. It’s inspiring to see how friendships develop between two or more complete strangers. I remember when I arrived here in the US, everything was still new and frantically, scary. But when I met the rest of the au pairs, they all took me under their wings. Thank each and everyone of you – You girls are AWESOME.

In order of our Buddy Appreciation Month we’ll be having a cluster get-together for all the au pairs/buddies on the 18 January, 1:00 pm @ Thunderbird Lanes, 1130 York Road, Willow Grove, PA 19090. Come be part of the fun!!

Are you a good buddy?

Our cluster started the Au Pair buddy program 8 months ago. What does being a buddy mean? When you arrived to the country for the first time, you probably didn’t know much about how and where to start to settle in. But you had a special friend already waiting for you from our group who was there for you and gave you support. For me this friend was Brenda, Au Pair from Mexico. Brenda showed me around the area and gave me great advices regarding our job.
Having a buddy also means that when you are leaving your home behind and come to the USA, you will already have a friend here! 🙂

You will eventually be a buddy yourself too. What can you do to help someone after arriving? You can show the area around, your favorite places, the best restaurants or coffee shops. You can introduce the new aupair to your friends, give advices, go out, have fun. You can prepare your favorite traditional meal and teach some expressions in your language. You can help someone to make the best out of the aupair experience by your support and friendship.

Having a buddy and being a buddy is a great project that we created and hopefully it will be something that we will keep doing in the future. To celebrate the new tradition, our Local Area Representative Polina will organize a buddy appreciation party with bowling and surprises. It will be on the 18th of January at Thunderbird Lanes, 1130 York Road, Willow Grove, PA 19090. If you want to have fun, come! It is a good chance to thank your buddy all the support and help. Thank you Polina for making this happen and organizing the event!

Ling, Au Pair from China, the first two weeks being an Au Pair in the USA.

Enjoy the post of my blog guest,  a new Au Pair from China Ling. Ling lives in Philadelphia, she is very active and for a short time made a lot of friends.Ling , Au Pair from China

Ling’s buddy Monica, the Au Pair from Colombia, who lives in Philadelphia for more than a year, is helping Ling constantly. Several months ago we started Au Pair buddy program as well as other Go Au Pair Agency’s clusters. It became much easier to adjust to life in the USA for new Au Pairs. Here is a proof Ling is in the Color Festival with other Au Pairs from the Philadelphia NJ cluster.Au Pairs Philadelphia Color Festival

I’m Ling, 26  years old, from China. It’s been 2 weeks since I came here. For a new Aupair and a family who has an Aupair the first time, the first week was hard. However, I guess communication is a very important thing for both Aupair and host family, because that’s how I worked things out. If you don’t know how to do it, you can tell your LAR about your situation, I’m sure she will help you.But also you need a great buddy, like me.  I have Monica, she helps me a lot. Lucky me!two Au Pairs from Philadelphia

And also I want to share something with you. I got upgraded from economic class to business class during my first journey(from Hong-Kong to Doha to America. Lucky, lucky!

Au pair trip from Ghina to Philadelphia

On Friday, we girls had a party, we chat, drink and play games. So my tips for new Aupair is-try to fit in other girls, you will feel less homesick.Au Pairs Philadelphia fun

Then the first weekend, Monica and I went to outlets for shopping. I bought a lot of things for the fall.Au Pair Philadelphia game

On the second Saturday, a few of us went to the color festival, it was awesome. We had a lot of fun together. But that is another story I would love to share with you.
