The Au Pair Program and Cultural Exchange

The Au Pair Program is a cultural exchange program that allows young adults from foreign countries to live and work in the United States for one year. Go Au Pair agency, one of the first Au Pair program in America among 15 agencies designated by the State Department, offers to Au Pairs  the opportunity to intimately experience work, life and culture in the U.S.Cultural exchange

The Au Pair program is centered around cultural exchange.  J1 visa participants have the opportunity to explore another culture and the possibility to study while living with an American host family.Peddler's villlage with Adriana's host

Cultural Exchange starts when the Au Pairs immerse in American life, become a member of host family and experience new things on a daily basis. But there are a lot of opportunities to  learn about American culture outside of the Host family.IMG_20131214_154102

There are also many chances to meet other Au Pairs from around the world who are having the same experiences, travel and share your unique culture with others.Go Au Pair team volunteered in Philadelphia

The Au Pairs should look for the many opportunities outside of their comfort zone, be  proactive, make a lot of new friends and try new things. The Au Pair program is full of opportunities to learn something new and have fun.

Springtime is a Popular Time to Match!

Consider a Transition Au Pair

Transition Au Pairs are Au Pairs in the US and in a rematch period. Clearly, transition Au Pairs start their year with one host family but for some reason stop their match with their host family.  They usually stay only part of the year and then rematch with a new host family.Au Pair Bucks County

Transition Au Pairs can be great candidates to consider, depending on what the host families are looking for. Very often Host Families and Au Pairs go into a rematch because of their personality differences. Sometimes, rejects from other families, can be a perfect match for other families. The best example is that one of the nominees for the Au Pair of the Year Award this year was a transition Au Pair and her new family said that she is the best of the best.2014

Other common reasons transitions occur are due to driving, language abilities and lack of childcare skills that particular family needs. However, some  families do not need a driver or speak the same language and are more flexible with the language skills. I noticed that some Au Pairs may not have great skills caring for young children, but do much better with older kids and the opposite.  An Au Pair can be overwhelmed working with three or five kids, or kids with special needs – which might not be a case for another host family.

Keep in mind that any Au Pair who jeopardizes her host children’s health or safety or violates the Au Pair programs rules is sent home, and her  J1 visa is canceled immediately. These Au Pairs cannot become Transition Au Pairs.

Also, often the Au Pairs show up in a rematch because their host family has violated the Au Pair program rules or due to their host families personal situations, like a job issue, moving outside the US, divorce or other changes inside of the family structure.aupair and kids

Therefore, consider interviewing an Au Pair in rematch- there are gems among transition Au Pairs.

Hire an Extending Au Pair.

Go Au Pair agency has many in country Au Pairs who are currently living with the Host Families and are looking to extend with a new family. There are two types of in country Au Pairs – Transition and Extension. Friendship has wings

First time Host Families often ask me which Au Pair will be better for their family: an Extension transfer Au Pair (in the country second year Au Pair) or a new one?

Extending Au Pairs are those who successfully completed a year with another host family. They are already residing within the US and have their J1 visa. They need to apply for an extension of the Form DS-2019, but it is simple. New Au Pairs depend on their J1 visa approval, so there are more chances that an extending Au Pair will be at the time the family needs her.Au Pair Bucks county

Extension transfer Au Pairs are typically available to start with a new family in a few months and are available for placements lasting 12, 9 or 6 months. You can read more about Extension Au Pairs.Aupair childcare

An extension Au Pair, or the second year Au Pair,  don’t need nearly as much time to adjust as a new Au Pair,  has a social security number, a bank account, and  has experience of living in the US. An extension Au Pair is usually more experienced, considered, adopted and conformed to the Au Pair program.au pairs love kids

Another benefit of an extension Au Pair is that a host family can speak with her Local Area Representative. The host family can also speak with an Au Pair’s host family in the US. The family may have an additional reference and compare own needs and parenting styles. Also, if the family needs a driver, there are a lot of extending Au Pairs who have been driving in the US.Au pair bucks county

Sometimes the family can interview their prospective Au Pair in person or can be lucky to find an Au Pair who is  an Au Pair in excellence.

There are many factors to consider.  You can read the discussion “Would you recommend an Extension Au Pair or a new au pair” from AUPAIRMOM blog.
