Au Pairs in the US – transition Au Pairs

New Host Families have many questions about transition Au Pairs,  why the transition Au Pairs are in rematch,  what is “wrong” with their host families is and what are the pros and cons of the situation. I wrote several posts regarding the reasons to why a family might consider Transition Au Pairs.MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

In short, transition Au Pairs are JI visa  participants who are in the US already and in a rematch for some reasons.  They will  usually stay only part of the year and are currently looking for a new host family.aupair and kids

Generally, Go Au Pair has transition Au Pairs ready for a rematch. All transition Au Pairs are available for placements that are less than 12 months long. Transition Au Pairs can be great candidates to consider.

Depending on what the host families are looking for, there are many benefits that come with transition Au Pairs. Transition Au Pairs are  normally available sooner in case you need someone right away. Transition Au Pairs don’t need nearly as much time to adjust as new Au Pairs, they have a social security number, a bank account, and  have some experience of living in the US.

The Au Pair program cost is usually slightly lower, and the discounts are often available. There is an opportunity to speak with a Local Area Representative and previous host families in the US . Sometimes, if the family is local they can even meet an Au Pair in person

Consider a Transition Au Pair

Transition Au Pairs are Au Pairs in the US and in a rematch period. Clearly, transition Au Pairs start their year with one host family but for some reason stop their match with their host family.  They usually stay only part of the year and then rematch with a new host family.Au Pair Bucks County

Transition Au Pairs can be great candidates to consider, depending on what the host families are looking for. Very often Host Families and Au Pairs go into a rematch because of their personality differences. Sometimes, rejects from other families, can be a perfect match for other families. The best example is that one of the nominees for the Au Pair of the Year Award this year was a transition Au Pair and her new family said that she is the best of the best.2014

Other common reasons transitions occur are due to driving, language abilities and lack of childcare skills that particular family needs. However, some  families do not need a driver or speak the same language and are more flexible with the language skills. I noticed that some Au Pairs may not have great skills caring for young children, but do much better with older kids and the opposite.  An Au Pair can be overwhelmed working with three or five kids, or kids with special needs – which might not be a case for another host family.

Keep in mind that any Au Pair who jeopardizes her host children’s health or safety or violates the Au Pair programs rules is sent home, and her  J1 visa is canceled immediately. These Au Pairs cannot become Transition Au Pairs.

Also, often the Au Pairs show up in a rematch because their host family has violated the Au Pair program rules or due to their host families personal situations, like a job issue, moving outside the US, divorce or other changes inside of the family structure.aupair and kids

Therefore, consider interviewing an Au Pair in rematch- there are gems among transition Au Pairs.
