Volunteered for Newtown Welcome Day with my Au Pair friends

Ophelia’s Diary.

After the yummy and heathy breakfast, we went to volunteer at the Newtown Welcome Day. Also, we met up with other Au Pairs from Go Au Pair there. We were going to volunteer together!

Go Au Pair

This was a new experience for me. Even thought we volunteered for Philadelphia Marathon and Flower Show before, this time was still different.

We helped distributing some flyers and other promotional items. It was fun. In China it will be hard to do volunteer work like this. Because people won’t take the promotional things from you nicely. They will think you are trying to take advantage of them.

But here is different, a lot of people take the promotional items happily. We were glad to see many people had the green bags we gave out!

Volunteering with other Au Pairs for Newtown Welcome Day we also spread the world and raised awareness about the Au Pair Program.Au Pairs Bucks County volunteers

After the volunteering, our Au Pairs friends still have more fun things to do together. I can’t wait to share all of them together with you.IMG_4151

An International Volunteer Day 2013: YOUNG.GLOBAL.ACTIVE.

December 5 was designated as an International Volunteer Day (IVD) by the United Nations in 1985 to celebrate the power of volunteering.  An International Volunteer Day has been celebrated around the world. The slogan of the International Volunteer Day 2013 is Young. Global. Active. tagline_ENG

For IVD 2013 we celebrate globally that young people act as the agents of change in their communities. Volunteering…. So much good energy coming to you!!!

By the Au Pair from Go Au Pair, the Philadelphia cluster, Monica.

My name is Monica Hinestroza and I’m from Colombia. I’ve been here in US as an Au Pair for 5 months already. So far this adventure has been amazing!Au Pair Philadelphia Monica

Today, I wanted to share with you guys the great experience that I had as a volunteer in the 20th Philadelphia Marathon on November 17th.IMG_20131117_132533

This marathon helped to raise money to support some associations, like the American Cancer Society which, for me, is amazing itself. Thanks to Polina Kravets, our Local Area Representative, several Au Pair friends from Go Au Pair and I were volunteers in this event. For most of us, the only motivation was to do something different and help someone else, but at the end of that day, I realized that being a volunteer is so much more than that.IMG_20131117_132717

On a beautiful, sunny and warm Sunday in November, we worked as a team, and we made thousands of bags with some snacks for the runners. Then, we gave them those bags, hand-to-hand, and there the magic moment stared……IMG_20131117_132610

Because for each bag that we gave them, they gave us back smiles, thanks, blessings and a lot of good energy. Didn’t matter how tired they were or we were in that moment, everybody… runners, volunteers and fans were so happy and so excited and for a couple of hours just being happy and positive was allowed.IMG_20131117_132349

It’s unbelievable how you give a little bit of your time to others, and they can give you so much energy and so much happiness.IMG_20131117_140458

This was my first time as a volunteer, and I can say, without a doubt, that I would love to do it again because being a volunteer you can feel the real power of the good energy coming to you. See you guys in the next adventure….!!!

We helped with food serving at the finished line. Distributing the  bags of snacks to every participant. When I handed a bag to them, I smiled to them too.au pair Ophelia at the Marathon

Every time, when I heard them said “Thank you” to me, my heart felt so warm.IMG_20131117_124615

My Au pairs friends and I were so proud of being volunteers at the Marathon.

Also, Thanks our dear Local Area Representative Polina so much. She helped us contact with the Marathon organizers. Then we had this great chance to experience this cultural exchange event.

Volunteering for a cause and cultural exchange.

People volunteer for a variety of reasons, often because they want to help others and give something back to the community. They receive some benefits for themselves from volunteering as well.

I think that volunteering is not only an exchange of services, but also, an opportunity to interact with a group of people from around the world. It is a part of the cultural exchange and the goal of the Au Pair program.

The international exchange is one of the many benefits of the Au Pair program. It gives Au Pairs a chance to meet other people and learn from people with diverse life experiences.

A Special Moment- Volunteering at the Philadelphia Marathon!

Imagine the day you finish your Au Pair program, come home and meet with your friends and family. Imagine you are sitting with your friends and family and answering their questions about your Au Pair adventure. Of course, there are a lot of things to tell – about your new friends and host family, the Go Au Pair agency and the Au Pairs meetings, your life in the US and American culture, fascinating vacations and American schools, etc.Au Paiirs goaupair

There are also some things to share that you may be proud of, something unique and extra that you did during your Au Pair year in the US, and special moments. Volunteering at the Philadelphia Marathon together with other Au Pairs and Americans who want to make a difference and help the community,  is one of the special moments that you will remember for the rest of your life.

The positive impact of Au Pairs volunteering for causes in the US.

On Sunday, 11.17.2013, twenty Au Pairs from Go Au Pair are going to volunteer at the Philadelphia Marathon and help the American Cancer Society. It is our first time of participating in such a Marathon. I didn’t expect that almost all Au Pairs in the area would like to join the team, but they did. There will be a huge cultural diversity Brazilian Au PairsChinese Au PairsColombian Au PairsSalvadorian Au Pairs,  Ecuadorian Au Pairs, German  Au Pairs, Panamanian Au PairsSouth African Au PairsMexican Au Pairs, French Au Pairs, Spain Au Pairs, and Cameroonian Au Pairs.Go Au Pair 11

I feel passionate about the positive impact of volunteering at the marathon. Volunteering  will bring a lot of benefits to the community and make a difference.

In addition, it will be useful to the young adults from around the world who choose to volunteer in the US.  It can be a first-hand experience for the Au Pairs and also, a life changing event. The Au Pairs will return back home, share with others and spread their experience all over the globe.

Volunteering for a cause is not common in some countries, and Au Pairs may feel like ambassadors. Many Au Pairs are very enthusiastic and motivated to change the word for the better. To start changing the world, we may need only to directly impact the lives of a few people. Smal steps… but here is a start – volunteering at the Philadelphia Marathon! See you there!

A Family Day Conference.

Please enjoy the post written by an Au Pair from Go Au Pair, from the Philadelphia cluster, Adriana Zhang. Thank you for sharing with us, Adriana.

Hi everyone. I’m Adriana, and I came from China. This is my first time to write on the blog about my au pair life. I think this is my fourth au pairs meeting. But this time it was really different than others. Because this time host families joined us. So I met other au pairs’ host families.Adriana au pair from China

Their kids were so cute. They played together, and had fun. We are really a big group. And also we have 6 au pairs from China. And we were happy to meet each other. We talked about our work, our school, and also we took pictures together. We wanted to keep the memory for this special time.IMG_20131013_133550

We met each other at Rat’s restaurant of Grounds for Sculpture Park. Our Local Area Representative—Polina was really nice, she prepared some gifts for everyone. Thank her so much.chinese Au Pairs

That’s really a beautiful park. There were so many different sculptures, and we took pictures. Also, the park had a special music event and had some people who wore special clothes and sang in the park. That song was beautiful.

And then we had the lunch together. I had fun with au pairs’ family. They are really nice and enthusiastic. It is an opportunity to share the experience and get to know each other better, gain cultural and social experience and make new friends from a different culture. And I also met some new friends.
